If You Can Read This, You Might Have Been Homeschooled

This slogan, sassy as it might be, is a popular one on homeschool t-shirts and bumper stickers.  It speaks volumes of the attitude and importance these families give to schooling their children at home.  It also shows that they can be an opinionated lot. I’m not passing judgment, because I happen to be one of those homeschoolers with a lot to say.

I’m not sure why homeschoolers have so much to say.  Maybe it is because we are continually in “learning mode.”  We are always...

Homeschooling on a Wing and a Prayer: 2011-12 Curriculum for the ...

We'll get to this soon, [Abeka Arithmetic 4] as we have a few things I held off from the 3rd year math because the child was not "getting" a few things and I simply didn't want to skim over it and then wait to see the fall out years down the road.  So we're working through the few goodies we didn't get to (and we started the 3rd level in Jan. so we haven't had a lot of time to go thru it) and then the 4th level will be used.

I also use lots of hands on activities, file folders with games,...

MamaTea from Minnesota - The Secular Homeschool Community

Hi everyone! I'm MamaTea from (very snowy) Minnesota. My husband and I have two sons (almost 8 and almost 7) who have been eclectically homeschooled since "the beginning" - whatever you consider that to be. My oldest son loves to read and hunt. My youngest son loves to sew and light saber fight. So we've got a pretty wild and varied household here.

We use a lot of different things here for school, keeping all our options open and doing whatever seems to work. We have 13 acres, a mix of woods,...

Read, Write & Type by Talking Fingers, Inc. at TOS Homeschool Crew

As homeschooling parents, it can be a blessing to live in this day and age where software is so readily available to help you teach your child everything and anything they need to know. But sometimes it can be hard to find quality software, and it is usually almost impossible to find software that focuses on more than one subject at a time, meaning all that learning is compartmentalized. But what if a program existed that covered several essential skills at the same time? And what if that...

Ten Favorite Features of the Weekly Homeschool Planner

This Top Ten list shifts slightly away from my normal lists. While I do not usually write posts focused on homeschooling here on this blog, it is a growing part of our family life. And family life – full of differing options and methods (like homeschooling or not) – is a part of living for God.

I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to review the Weekly Homeschool Planner by Jolanthe at Homeschool Creations. After spending time looking over each of the pages and putting a few...

Online Homeschool Geometry

Many parents successfully homeschool their children, from the preschool years through graduation from high school. As your child grows and studies more complex subjects, you may wonder if you are able to teach advanced-level courses such as geometry, even if you once took the classes yourself. Online courses teach students the important concepts of geometry through complete and interactive methods, so you can know that your child is receiving a good education.

Memories of a Homeschooled Homeschooler: the schedule

Usually, she was either in the midst of taxes and bookkeeping or scheduling our homeschool. We went through a lot of schedules during my homeschool years, and like any great master, Mom was always sure we could do something better or more efficiently. Tweak this subject here, add a little more time there, take out this activity and move it to that time slot. But we were kids, and school was—well—school, no matter where we did it. And I know we didn't give her an easy time, in spite of her...

Connected Mom: Starting Our Homeschool Collection

Since we officially decided to homeschool our daughter for at least Kindergarten, we decided to start getting things really organized so she can study and learn whenever she wants now so we are in a good place once we "officially" start to homeschool next Fall.

We are going to be using a mixture of homeschooling and unschooling practices to keep us all sane, while helping her learn and have fun.  We've already had a few doses of what happens when we push her beyond what she wants to do, and I...

The Homeschool Journey: September Boom and Bust

Christopherus

September Boom and Bust If you're like most homeschoolers, you started your new homeschooling year well organized, with clear goals and with great enthusiasm. You had all your lessons well planned, with interesting and engaging projects to do to keep the work well rounded. You memorized a couple of stories, a song and three verses and felt on top of things. Your children were excited, well behaved and compliant. Chores got done, walks were taken, stories listened to and main...
