A 9th grader *can* take the PSAT, but I almost never recommend it.

The PSAT can be taken at a local public or private high school. Literature-based vs. Reality-based Homeschool - Home High School

We used both Sonlight and the Lightning Lit guides from Hewitt Homeschooling Resources. Both instructor’s guides included comprehension-type questions that incorporated literary analysis, vocabulary, etc. I had the boys answer the questions in notebooks, and periodically we would spend time going over the answers, giving me a sense of the depth of their comprehension.
