Melissas Homeschool Blog: Virtual School

I signed DJ up today for the Florida Virtual School, as a homeschool child. I want him to take Spanish, as he needs a language to graduate and I know I can not teach it. I am lucky I can teach English. We will see how that goes, and then decide from there for other courses. Since it is free, I might as well take advantage of it. The process was much simpler from when I looked five years ago. They have a public school and homeschool option. Hopefully this will make classes I can not teach easier...

Homeschooling in South Africa: Registration and the Law for ...

It is interesting to note that, at the time of writing this, November 2008, the Gauteng DOE site actually has a lot of supportive information and links to homeschool curriculum from their site! Some homeschoolers' have a good relationship with the DOE and are registered. Others, even those in the same area, may not be so fortunate. If you do register, take note of what is required by the Act and do not let officals attempt to expect anything other than that from you. Unfortuantely some...

College Prep Genius: Master the S.A.T. Class, A Review

As a member of the TOS Homeschool crew, this year I am reviewing many homeschooling products that I have received for free. I am not paid to say nice things about the products, but I am obligated to use the product with my boys and share my honest opinions with you.

While our children are in the high school years, it is easy for them to get overwhelmed with the amount of activities on their plate. Driver's ed, scouts, church activities,...

Elementary Homeschool Curriculum: Teaching to Different Learning ...

Many books have been written on the subject, and it seems everyone has an opinion on what the different learning styles are and how to best teach each type of learner. Often a child will take after their parent, so if you know you’re a verbal learner, perhaps your child is too. Knowing what type of learner your child is will help you teach material in a way they are able to learn with the least effort. Verbal students do well in traditional school settings. They are good readers and writers,...

VT DOE Tries to Pull a Fast One | Tenselblog

There has been a lot of excitement during the past few weeks for Vermont homeschoolers, and not the good kind. The Vermont Department of Education tried to change the regulations governing home study. The problem is that they went about it in the kind of sneaky, back-door manner that you expect to see in Washington, not here in Vermont.

Just briefly, this is how the current law works. Homeschoolers in Vermont have to submit a yearly enrollment notice to the state. This consists of an...

A blog about science, math, and engineering education. Posts include editorial commentary on public schools, ideas for math/science/preengineering homeschool and school curriculum, and interesting science and technology news.

I was not expecting to be homeschooling in the high school years, so when we pulled my 9th grader out of school to be home schooled, I was completely unprepared and very naive.  I assumed that we would be able to buy textbooks similar to those she used in school and...
