Melissas Homeschool Blog: Florida Homeschool Laws and Letter of ...

Tons of homeschool info, tips, and links. Homeschooling in Florida, plus lots of other great info.

Since Caitlin will be starting kindergarten, I have to send a letter of intent for her. In the state of Florida, your child does not have to star officially schooling until they are six years old, by February 1st. Caitlin is 5, and will not be six until May 2010, so technically that means she does not need to be enrolled in any school, in Florida, until February of 2011. Why would that matter to a...

Melissas Homeschool Blog: Virtual School

I signed DJ up today for the Florida Virtual School, as a homeschool child. I want him to take Spanish, as he needs a language to graduate and I know I can not teach it. I am lucky I can teach English. We will see how that goes, and then decide from there for other courses. Since it is free, I might as well take advantage of it. The process was much simpler from when I looked five years ago. They have a public school and homeschool option. Hopefully this will make classes I can not teach easier...

Melissas Homeschool Blog: Report Cards

Tons of homeschool info, tips, and links. Homeschooling in Florida, plus lots of other great info.

The first week of Spring Break is over, and I have accomplished a lot. I finished up report cards today, and both are progressing well. DJ's math grade went up, a huge accomplishment. I did notice the last two weeks of the semester he was slacking off again, and not reading questions completely. This was true for both math and science, so he will need to get back to working on that in the last...

Melissas Homeschool Blog: Report Cards, and Birds Fall From The Sky

It is time for second quarter report cards. Caitlin does not get a graded report card, but more of a progress report. She is doing well and can now skip count by twos to twenty with no prompts or manipulatives needed. She will begin going to 40 in quarter 3. She has mastered riding her bike without training wheels, and can almost completely tie her shoes on her own. She has almost completed her addition math book, and will begin subtraction in the next quarter. Reading phonetically continues to...

Melissas Homeschool Blog: First Quarter Report Cards

Tons of homeschool info, tips, and links. Homeschooling in Florida, plus lots of other great info.

First Quarter report cards are completed, and both DJ and Caitlin did very good. DJ was very nervous because his 3 and 4 digit multiplication has been such a challenge. Report cards as follows: Caitlin: Did not get a letter grade report card, but just a smiley face and generalized comment on advancing of work. She has done quite well and I am most impressed with her determination to get the math...

Melissas Homeschool Blog: Tenths, Hundredths and Report Cards

I completed the first semester report cards last night, for both children. I use the report cards to reflect and learn how they are progressing. So what did I learn. For one thing DJ does not understand the decimals, specifically decimals to the right of the decimal point. I just think it hasn't been covered enough yet. I also discovered that DJ rushes through his math and makes silly mistakes on material he knows. I always made him do math first thing each day. I slacked with that this year,...

Petition To Change Florida Virtual Homeschool Laws - Melissas ...

Tons of homeschool info, tips, and links. Homeschooling in Florida, plus lots of other great info.

Before I get to the topic, I must say I was stunned last night when Adam was in the bottom two, on American Idol. I just could not believe it. There I got that off my chest, now on to other things. Florida offers children a Virtual Homeschool option. Many parents choose this option, as it is free, and you do not have to worry about planning a curriculum. The child must be in at least fifth grade,...
