“How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.”

My older son is studying American History this year.  It happens to be one of his favorite subjects!  One of the things I’ve always loved to do along with our study of history...

Commemorating the Constitution - Attention Utah Residents ...

As we all know, Constitution Day was last month. Okay, I have to make a confession here; I didn't really know that. I wouldn't have even noticed it were it not for a great article in my local newspaper, telling all about the Constitution and the men who brought it to pass. As a brief rundown of the history: 16th century Europe is responsible for planting the seeds of the American Revolution. It was a time of great upheaval of traditional knowledge. Copernicus shattered the illusion of the...

Overwhelmed- new to homeschooling

Hi allie879, and welcome! I would like to recommend two pages for you to visit first... the Time4Learning Getting Started with Homeschooling guide (you don't have to use T4L to find the information in there REALLY helpful) and the HSLDA page for South Carolina Homeschool Laws. You don't have to join an association if you don't want to, if you have a high school diploma or GED. Having said that though, homeschool groups can be a wonderful resource, especially for new homeschoolers.

As far as...

Adventures in Homeschooling: Our Week: Field Trips, Pilgrims, and ...

I'm glad we had so much time at home last week because this week has been busy. We also have a busy weekend planned.

Colin had hockey practice on Monday and Wednesday.

Tuesday we went on a field trip to the Lazy 5 Ranch. It was a beautiful fall day and we had so much fun. The kids loved feeding all the animals.

Thursday we went to see Seussical at the Children's Theatre. It was great, one of the best plays we've seen! Unfortunately, pictures aren't allowed during the show so this is all I...

Possibly coming here (probably long)

I realize it is a bit soon but DH and I had a talk about finances for next year. We won't be able to continue with what we were using and have to use something much more frugal for our homeschooling. We were using Sonlight which I liked and they liked, but even used it is too much money. That said I should mention that I do know lots about CM as we used to use Ambleside but all of the reading aloud, 2 levels and the old language just killed my love for CM....

Back-to-school day in Alberta, or, So you're thinking about home schooling...

Today is the first day of school for Alberta public and separate (Catholic) schools, so in honor of that fateful day, two years ago, when Laura came off the school bus -- a two-hour roundtrip, by the way -- in tears after her first day of first grade (or Grade One as it's known up here) because "they're doing baby work and you have to go tell the teacher I know it already," an incomplete and highly subjective list of...

The Forest Room: Homeschool Resource Meme

Phyllis at All Things Beautiful tagged me for a meme about 6 weeks ago. I feel like I've been brain dead, so I'm just now getting around to it. It's all about homeschooling resources, so it requires a bit of thought. Let's see if I can manage that. . . 1.One homeschooling book you have enjoyed. I'll just go with the most recent, How Children Fail by John Holt. Lately I've been exploring the concept of unschooling, reading books and blogs and articles. Just another step in my education...

Homeschooling South Africa Q&A: I am not a Qualified Teacher, can ...

What you have always wanted to know but didn't know who to ask

This is a concern that parents, going into homeschool, have. It is also a question that I have been asked many times - "Are you qualified to teach?" As parents, I believe, we are naturally born teachers. We teach our children how to eat, talk, walk and how to be pleasant, disciplined little people (or we should be anyhow).

The author of our curriculum, Ivana Ries, has said that it is much better if you do not have the strict...
