Why I Homeschool: Because life isn't fair | One Thousand Drums

This is the third post in a series on why I homeschool.  In the last post, I confessed my selfishness.  I didn’t go into homeschooling being selfish, quite the contrary.  But I found a benefit that was uniquely mine and it quickly became one of the main reasons I continue educating my children.  It’s taking my own education to the next level. I’m all over that.

Moving on, it is my personal belief that learning to build a home and family is a fundamental life skill, whether you are a...

Homeschooling an ADHD Kid Can Be Frustrating

You are here: Home / Family Life / ADHD / Homeschooling an ADHD Kid Can Be Frustrating

We are getting behind in our lessons.  Some of it was because I was out of town last week, but a lot of it is my kid.  He just can’t sit still for anything.  Well…he will sit still for science experiments.  Science experiments are great but I still need to teach him to read and all that other jazz.

I find myself just getting mad at him, then in turn he is a teary mess, then I am a teary mess…on and...

Homeschool vs. home school? Spelling counts.

What comes to mind when you see the word homeschool?  How about home school or home-school?

There has been some confusion over the years about the spelling of this word.  Though homeschooling isn’t new, it has taken some time to receive mainstream acceptance.  Even now, the name still lacks universal standardization, compounded by the fact that some homeschoolers still don’t get it right themselves.

Most homeschoolers spell it as one word.  But others use two.  Occasionally,...

Home-Schooling | The Amish Cook from Oasis Newsfeatures

Editor's Adventures subscribers should have received their video of me going through 14-year-old Susan Eicher's school books (she gave me permission). I kicked her out of her classroom for a few minutes so we could see how she studies.  Susan is a very meticulous, thorough scholar.  I wish I would have been more like her in school!  I ran some of these photos extra-large just because I think Rachel did a good job of shooting them and I love Susan's penmanship in that one photo.  While...

Homeschool vs. public school diplomas « Contending with the Culture

The final requirement on that page requiring a score of “proficient” on the three Gateway exams (Biology I, English II, Algebra I) has been altered, by the way. The Gateway exams are gone. They will be replaced with ten standard state-wide end-of-course tests that all public school students will be required to take. But the new tests won’t be high-stakes must-pass gateway exams. Instead, they will count as 25% of the student’s final grade in each of the ten designated courses.

Which...

Creativity for our Home School and Public School Students

I have found that creativity is stifled in most public school  settings. Our students are taught to stay with in the narrow box of how and what the teacher is guiding them to learn. A student who  finds a new way to do something is told that they must do it the way the teacher has instructed them to do it. This is terrible! Thinking out side the box is what drives the mind to reach new horizons!

If we always think with in the narrow confines of what others think is possible then progress...

Written by Beth Corcoran, Contributing Writer

When I tell people that we homeschool year round, I usually get one of two responses.  I often hear from homeschooling families, “Oh, we try to do that, too.”  And then I often hear, “Why on earth would you do that to yourself and your poor kids?”
